Kaltostat is composed of calcium‑sodium alginate fibres that absorb wound exudate and body fluids, converting into a soft, moist gel that conforms to the wound bed. This helps maintain a moist wound healing environment, supports fluid balance, and allows atraumatic dressing changes.

When applied to a bleeding wound, the dressing’s alginate structure can also help promote haemostasis (minor bleeding control) by supporting clot formation at the wound surface.
