Iodine has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity and is highly effective against bacteria including MRSA, fungi, protozoa and viruses. Preparations containing Cadexomer Iodine ( Iodoflex and Iodosorb ) release free iodine when exposed to wound exudate and the Cadexomer absorbs wound exudate and encourages desloughing.
Iodosorb is a cadexomer powder or ointment with iodine, suitable for the treatment of infected exuding wounds. It is highly absorbent and offers a moist wound healing environment. It has antimicrobial and desloughing properties that make it highly effective at treating infection and healing heavy exuding wounds. It can be used under compression therapy. The smart release system of Cadexomer Iodine allows Iodosorb to provide a sustained antimicrobial activity for up to 72 hours. It may be used on infected wounds and under compression therapy. This ointment is used for the treatment of chronic exuding wounds such as leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, and diabetic ulcers. Iodosorb changes colour from brown to yellow when the dressing requires changing. Iodosorb is available in an ointment and powder formulation.
